Google Search Tips
* Use keywords
Don’t type a full question – this is the fastest way to Wiki Answers or Yahoo Answers. Use main words or phrases and try a few different combinations.
* Quotation marks
o Search for words in a phrase together – “global warming” looks for that phrase and not every website with the word global or the word warming in it
* Site locator
What is the best type of website for your topic? Type site:gov and only get government websites. Examples:
“global warming” site:gov
“global warming” site:edu
“global warming” site:org (remember, some nonprofits have a particular bias or may not be reputable)
* Date range
Click on search tools under the search bar and select the little triangle next to “any time”. You can search the past hour, week, month, or year or you can put in a custom date range.
* Page rank
Remember that Google does not rank pages based on quality. For every website you open you must determine who wrote the page and evaluate it.
* Control F
Find a lengthy article? Click control F and type in a word or phrase. This word will then be highlighted so you can skim the article.
