Remember to use your information literacy skills when dealing with stories about COVID-19. There is a lot of misinformation on social media about the virus. See the video below.
Stop by the library to check out our display - see what your teachers like to read. This is a reminder that you should be wary of news that comes from social media. It is easy to manipulate images - see the two viral examples below (from News Literacy Project, https://newslit.org/educators/sift/). To verify news go to a trusted news source that follows journalistic procedures. Always question who is behind the information on Twitter or Instagram! And use Tiny Eye to do a reverse image search on a questionable image - find out where it really came from. Directions: click the link below to evaluate this website. Would you use this site for research about the minimum wage? Why or why not? Part One: https://www.minimumwage.com/2020/01/new-year-new-harmful-wage-mandates-for-business-owners/ All NPHS students and staff have FREE unlimited access to the New York Times. You can make an account and log in on as many devices as you want - phones, computers, iPads, etc.
Simply click the "Helpful Links" tab above and find NY Times Subscription. Follow the instructions and be sure to use your SCHOOL email. See Ms. Arkans with any questions or problems. It's getting tougher than ever to determine if a website is valid or not. It's very easy to make a beautiful looking website - anyone can do it! How do the experts figure out what websites to use? They use SIDEWAYS RESEARCH (sometimes also called LATERAL READING). Before you spend too much time on a site, open a new tab (the sideways part) and google around to see what you can learn about the site. What can you dig up about a website by leaving it and doing some investigating? John Green explains this very well in this episode of Crash Course. Take a look! Research just got a little easier - Noodletools is now part of the Google Suite of apps. No more logging in and having to remember a Noodletools password! Click on the image above for detailed instructions to use Noodletools through your school Google account.
